TOP 3 REASONS WHY TV
& RADIO
HAVE YOUR STUDENTS HYPNOTIZED!
Attention Parents & Teachers...
Have
you ever wondered why children
seem to have such an easy time remembering songs they hear on
the radio, but may struggle with remembering their multiplication
facts? Have you ever heard your middle school student repeating
lyrics from the latest music video effortlessly, but when
you asked them what an Exponent was they were at a loss for
words? Why does this happen? The answer is simple. Radio and music
videos use three important elements, we call them the three
R's, “Rhyme,
Rhythm & Repetition”. Let's take a look at each one. When you use “Rhyme”, you automatically
build connections and relationships between words and concepts. In other words, you create relevance.
Anytime you have relevance signals are sent to the brain that
say “this is important, remember this”.
The second important element is Rhythm. When you use “Rhythm”, you involve
the body.
You turn what is being heard into a kinesthetic sensation – it becomes
an
experience! How many times have you heard your favorite song
and immediately began bopping your head, snapping your fingers,
patting your foot, or even breaking in to a dance? That's
because music in general is something you feel. Everything
from the various instruments being
used, the tone and pitch of the performer's voice, the tempo,
and the wide range of treble and bass frequencies produced by
these elements constitute a vibratory force that's felt all over the body. Not to mention all the intense emotional states that music can cause us to have.
It
simply can't be resisted.
The third important element is “Repetition”. We all know
that when something is seen, heard, or done over and over again, it becomes second nature. Radio is notorious for being very repetitive and making things stick in your head
– with virtually no effort on your part! Another
reason music is
so effective in relation to learning is that music helps us to
“let our guard down”. It causes us to relax more
and doesn't require intense focus and concentration in the way
traditional teaching methods do. You just simply relax and
listen. Think about it, do you have to to try
to listen to the radio, of course not, you just listen. When this
happens, you automatically go into an “Alpha”
brainwave state, in which your subconscious mind becomes more
receptive and your more likely to retain information. This is
how you find yourself repeating lyrics and jingles or quoting
one-liners from movies. Music also has a powerful way of engaging
us on the physical, mental, and emotional levels all at once –
synchronizing the various “modes of learning”.
Meet Your Students Where They Are
In the book “Music
and Learning” by Chris Brewer, 1995, Brewer states:
“Songs, chants, poems, and raps will improve memory of content
facts and details through rhyme, rhythm, and melody.
Teaching these to students or having them write their own is a
terrific memory tool”. The main point to understand is
that it's very important to meet your students where they are,
and there's no denying that music is an immensely powerful
medium for doing just that. Parents,
imagine your students approaching their schoolwork with the same vigor
and enthusiasm as they would picking up the latest release from
their favorite recording artists. Teachers, imagine how engaged
your classroom would be if you were able to communicate,
inspire and motivate your students by presenting their academic material
to them in a language that they could
relate to! How much easier and fun would your job as an educator be?
Let's face it, TV and Radio aren't going anywhere anytime soon, but that doesn't mean you have to “play the
background” and allow mainstream media to be the primary influence in the development of your children and students.
